    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Joseph Govett was a master builder proposed for membership in The Carpenters' Company several times (1765, 1771, 1772) but was blocked from admission until 1772 because of his membership in the Journeymen Carpenters' Company. He was an "encourager" of the Philadelphia edition of Abraham Swan's The British Architect (R. Bell for J. Norman, 1775), the first book on architecture published in America. When the Library Company erected its hall on Fifth Street (designed by William Thornton) in 1789-1790, Govett received two shares in the library for contributed services. <br /><br />Written by Roger W.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Robert Annesley Govett was a master builder in Philadelphia elected to the Carpenters' Company of Philadelphia in 1833. He served as a Company Warden from 1838-1840 and on the Managing Committee from 1841-1843. In 1835, Govett lived at 9 Bonsall street and in 1840 he lived at 357 Cedar street. He appears in the Philadelphia city directories as a carpenter from 1835 through 1840. Govett was clearly following his trade at the time of his death in 1852 inasmuch as his will charges his executors with "completing any Buildings which may be unfinished at the time of my decease."     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Grand Federal Edifice built by the Company in 1987/88 by, as closely as possible, the specifications from the original built by the Company in 1788. The float designed by Charles Willson Peale was part of the parade after the ratification of the Constitution in 1788. There was a column for each of the 13 states although three were flat because had not ratified the constitution at time of parade. Peale designed the dome to Unite the States.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[David Gray was elected to the Carpenters’ Company in 1801 after being proposed for membership by Alexander Steel. In the 1805 city directory he was listed at 162 N. 5th street and in 1814 he was listed at 137 N. 5th street. In 1799, Gray was paid a little over 44 pounds by Elizabeth Powell for constructing a new necessary house behind City Tavern. In 1801 Powell again paid Gray to change the tavern’s entire roof form, remove the front pediment, make dormer windows, shingle the roof and other repairs.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Isaac Griffith was master builder elected to the Carpenters' Company in 1816. According to the directory, Griffith changed residences fairly frequently, multiple times he was listed on Kunckle street and N. 3rd street. He was the carpenter responsible for the Free Will Baptist Meeting House located on the south side of Queen street between Fifth and Sixth streets.     <dcterms:title><![CDATA[Griscom, Tobias]]></dcterms:title>
    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Tobias Griscom was a master builder and an early member of The Carpenters' Company, although no Company records prior to the 1760s survive to provide an exact date. In 1736 he became a shareholder of the Library Company and transferred the share to Benjamin Loxley in 1749. That same year the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting recorded that "Whereas Tobias Griscom, late of this city Carpenter, was educated and made profession among us the people called Quakers, but hath for some Time past accustomed himself to keep loose and Idle company to the neglecting of his business &amp; by that to repeated breaches of his promises, for which he hath been often treated with and advised to reform his conduct notwithstanding which he hath since absconded privately from his Family to the prejudice of his creditors, therefore this meeting doth testify against him and disown him to be a member of our religious society. . . And the clerk is desired to send a copy to some Friend at Duck Creek meeting, where it is said he now is . . ." Griscom appears to have moved to Kent County, Delaware, to the Duck Creek area (now Smyrna) where he died in 1751.<br /><br />
