Ogilby, Joseph

Description

Joseph Ogilby was a leading master builder elected to The Carpenters' Company in 1773. He became a Warden of The Company in 1775 but was replaced the next year when it was reported that he had left the city. Ogilby was an "encourager" to the Philadelphia edition of Abraham Swan, The British Architect (1775), the first book of architecture published in America. Following the Revolution he returned to Philadelphia and resumed his active participation in Company affairs: Assistant in 1782, governing committee in 1784-93, 1798-1800. He received two shares in the Library Company for work performed at Library Hall and helped to found two fire companies: Reliance (1786) and Weccacoe (1800). By 1809 Ogilby was a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland, where he died.
