John Hall was a master builder, a founder of the Friendship Carpenters Company (1769) and an "encourager" of the Philadelphia edition of Abraham Swan's The British Architect (R. Bell for J. Norman, 1775), the first book on architecture pubished in America. When the Friendship Company and The Carpenters' Company merged in 1786, Hall became active in The Company and was elected Warden in 1791.
