Fostering Ideas and Institutions
Eighteenth century meetings generally took place in homes, taverns or coffee shops. The erection of Carpenters’ Hall in 1773 provided an alternative for those organizations that wanted a permanent spacious location that provided opportunities for both quiet and private conversations. The Company’s first tenant was the Library Company of Philadelphia which took over the full second floor in 1773.
